Brooklyn Wharehouse

after the disaster that was the Halifax Psychic Fair I ended up at Brooklyn Wharehouse for lunch. It was the best thing I have eaten here. It is SO good. Like, no words, so good.

I always drink an insane amount of water so the fact that they give you an entire bottle is magic.

macchiato, I was so tired, like, SO tired.

this was delicious

Psychic Fair

Okay, I know this exists because I saw an ad for it last month and I wrote the details in my calendar, besides that good freaking luck finding info on it online. There is a gathering of hippy folk at the Halifax forum for the next three days. I can't remember the times, but I am going Saturday at 11am (when I think it opens). I have no money for such things so I am paying for it with rolled change (we all now that doesn't count). I believe in this shit and as my friend Matt says "trust the ones with the nicest bling and bitchingest nails" so I will take that into consideration.

Basically, GO. Go and be frivolous for an afternoon. Who knows, maybe you will learn something.

Summer of Murray

I can't believe it is Thursday. My week is all fucked up.

Okay, tonight you need to go see Caddyshack. The Atlantic Film Festival's AlFresco Film Festo is hosting The Summer of Murray. Every Friday until August 26 a Bill Murray film will be screened on the Halifax Waterfront. It is $5 and located between the Seaport Farmers Market and Bishops Landing.

The Fireside Restaurant

I went to the Fireside. It was fucking delicious. That is all.

Oh, and my friend wants to go to Martini Monday's, but we always work Monday nights so that doesn't work, but it sounds like my kinda jam.

& they have a website

FALAFEL

I have a major discovery to share: Venus Pizza Falafel Pita's.

This is the best thing to happen to my life in recent memory. A friend was like "you need chicken shawarma" and I was like, um, I am not so big on the meat thing and she was like IT IS AMAZING so I ended up there late one night and I got their falafel pita. Changed my life. Delicious. I can not even talk about how many times I have found myself there in the last three weeks. I thought I was doing okay, that I had cracked the addiction, but tonight I found myself wandering by (I live two blocks away! It is not my fault!) and I once again brought home the falafel pita.

it looks so innocuous doesn't it?

still doesn't look like much eh? LIES

this is falafel mecca.
I didn't even know that falafel existed this good. It is out of this world. Like, I have had A LOT of falafel in my time and nothing prepared me for this. Ugh, so delicious. AND THE PICKLES. The pickles are unreal. I didn't know pickles came that delicious and I LOVE pickles. There is also lettuce and tomatoes, beets and tahini. Once again, DELICIOUS.

So get your ass down to Venus Pizza and get your eats on!

Afternoon on a Boat

I love boats. I love the water. I love just chilling on a boat. So I took my rolled changed and bought a ticket on a boat. Best afternoon in a long while. I went with Murphy's The Cable Warf's Nature and Whale Watching Tour. Now we didn't see any whales, but I was more in it for the ride so that was okay. I did see some seals and the Mola Mola fish, and a lot of seagulls. I also learned a lot about lobsters. Test me on lobster knowledge, I will amaze you.

Crew at Break time today - Tuesday
For those who do not know what to do with scapes, there are some recipes on the blog. One recent for garlic scape pesto. For dinner the night before last I collected a bunch of left overs from the cooler. I sauteed mushrooms and garlic scapes in olive oil and curry seasoning. Then I added chunks of zucchini chopped kale (lots of kale). I ended up adding a bit of chicken bouillon powder too. In the meantime I boiled potatoes. Once the kale was tender, I added a can of coconut milk and let it all simmer together. I mashed the potatoes, adding butter and whipped cream since I had some left over (terrible I know) and then I served. The kids said, "Mom, I actually like this". Yahoo! It took about 20 minutes total.

Now that it is summer and the kids are home and the farm is busy, I have tried to set up some boundaries for myself. Part of this has been an important learning that I do not need to and cannot do everything. SO.....we have great support and a great farm team.

Geoff is CSA Manager. He responds to emails, he makes sure you get what you order and he makes sure the boxes are put together well and delivered. He also delivers on Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays.

Falicia is helping in the office. She sometimes responds to emails and helps us to manage the day to day office activity. She works from 8-12 each day.

Alex has started driving on Mondays - doing the deliveries for the 20 weeks.

Jem attends the Farmers Market in Truro on Wednesday and he delivers CSA boxes on Thursday to Hammonds Plains. And starting this week will also do deliveries to a few wholesale customers in the City. This a new market for us that we are trying out this year.

I think that outlines how things are going right now. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know.

The Canada Day farm day went really well I thought. If you have any pictures from the day it would be great if you would send the to me.
We are now into July and it feels very summer like. The 1500 napa cabbage that we planted to have as early napa all bolted. I think I mentioned this before. Because of the cool weather all of June they got tricked and they just went straight to flowering. They are definitely a loss for us all.

Also, one last thing. We are in the process of signing a contract to have the Taproot Van insulated and have a reefer installed. I wanted to have it done before the heat of the summer but it just kept being put on the back burner. As you can imagine it is kind of important to have the van cold so that we can ensure that the veggies remain cold. I am contemplating how to fund this job. What did you all think or feel about how the down payment went last year? With better organization with our book keeping this year I think many of the challenges from last year would be over come - but did you like the concept??? The total cost, installed and taxes in is $15 000.00. Yikes is all I can say at this point.

I hope you are all well and happy and eating lots of yummy veggies.

Remember that you are welcome to come for a walk about the farms anytime. We don't need to be around, you can just stroll about.

Take Care!
Patricia

An Adventure: VV and the Ferry

So I love ferries. A lot. It is very surprising that before today I have not been on one of the two ferries here. Today I took the Woodland Ferry to Value Village. It was quite an adventure mainly due to the fact that the Woodland Ferry doesn't leave until 3:07pm.... which I found out after I handed over my fare at 1:57pm. Luckily I have a kindle and nothing else to do.
It was surprisingly lovely given the 900 degree heat. It was ridic. I don't know what it is, methinks it is the sunscreen, but I was not 'glowing' ladies. I sat out on the boardwalk in the shade and got started on Anthony Bourdains: The Nasty Bits.

Then I got to go on a very short ferry ride:

Then I ended up at the nicest Value Village I have ever been to. It was SO clean and organized. Like, there aren't just skirts. There are summer skirts, short skirts, long skirts... someone with OCD must run that place. I  rolled all my change $57 worth and thought that I would go on a VV spree. Typical of myself I spent $0. Yep, I didn't buy one thing. What the balls.
this dress was amazing in person, the yellow was almost neon and it was all kinds of fabulous.

yes, these shoes exist in real life.
