Your Father's Mustache

Sunday was a very busy day for me. A friend who I had not seen in three (!) years was in town and we had quite the day. The day began with a stop at Your Father's Mustache for brunch. It was 2pm. Whoops. Luckily they serve brunch until 3pm on weekends.

The place was hopping! It was the first nice day in a loooooong time and everyone was taking advantage of the rooftop patio. It was lovely. YFM is on Spring Garden (5686 to be exact) and the patio has great views of the Public Gardens and the rest of downtown.

YFM also has more than one veggie option on the menu which was appreciated was we are both vegetarians. After much debate between a veggie burger or crepes, I went with the mixed berry crepes. I would give them a 3/5. They were okay. Not bad by any means, but not really great either. My cohort went with a traditional breakfast of scrambled  eggs and toast minus the meat and add extra fruit.

All in all Your Father's Mustache is a place I will definitely be going again.
The patio is fantastic and the food is promising.

Freak Lunchbox

First off, I cannot believe it is only Monday. I had a crazy day yesterday and am
totally beat. The best day! Now I am looking outside and it is raining and I have
a job to apply for about 6 blocks away. Balls.
BUT here is a review of a place bound to cheer you up!

I went to Freak on that foggy night to get some snacks for my wander.

my haul: candy, a glorified butterfinger and taffy = $7
inside my bag were cherry twists, swedish fish and salt water taffy.
Freak Lunchbox is amazing! The staff were very friendly and we chatted about blogging (yes, I am trying to make this happen). There is a large selection of candy in bins that you get charged $1.65/100grams (I think, I am a tad foggy). There is a healthy selection of obscure chocolate bars with a large choice of Wonka chocolate and candy. There are also a variety of gag/fun gifts i.e. fake vomit. It is a definite MUST if you are in downtown Halifax.

A Wander - Foggy Nights

It was the most beautiful evening the other day. There was no wind, a lovely temperature and the fog was beautiful. A perfect night for a waterfront wander.
I ended up chilling at the dock where the last photo was taken until it cooled down too much and I had to head home.

I'll be there

Hey, if you are looking for something to do tonight there is a fun event that I will be attending and you should too!

Animation with Love, Home Sweet Home

When: Thu., May 26, 7 p.m.
The Centre for Art Tapes and Carbon Arc present one night of contemporary animation shorts.

It's better the second time 'round

First off, I have been woefully remiss in my posting, whoops, time certainly got away from me this week.  I have been on the job hunt holed up in my place filling out endless online applications with questions like:

*You overhear a group of your co-workers laughing at some crude jokes about a few customers.
Which of the following would you most likely do?
- Join in and share some jokes of your own.
- Tell your co-workers that this could get them in trouble if someone else heard them.
- Tell your supervisor about this offensive behavior.
- Decide not to say anything this time, thinking you'll tell your supervisor if it happens again.

Now, obviously I would have been the one initiating this conversation, but for the sake of making my rent I chose option b... I think. Anyways, after days of filling out applications and making cover letters (my least favorite activity) all I wanted to do was shop. But, since I don't have a job this shopping needs to be done mainly in my head/filling carts online and fleeing the site before purchase or at the Salvation Army.

So I have gone on a few shopping adventures. First, I went to the Sally Ann by the Dartmouth Bridge Terminal.  Which you can get to on any bus that crosses the Macdonald Bridge. Here I got a dress $3.99, a top $2.99, and a table cloth $.99:

SA #1 - blue dress on the left and navy/white top beside it
Isn't my dining area/desk cute?!
This SA is in a little strip mall that also houses a consignment/pawn shop. Here I picked up a floor lamp (above) for $19.99. Yes, I did take that lamp on the bus.

A few days later I went to Tim Hortons for a chat with a friend and then we headed over to the Salvation Army Downtown/South End. We spent a really, really long time in there and it was great. It was dead so we weren't having to squish by people and there were no old ladies screeching the hangers along the racks and they pawed through stuff. We both walked away with a lot of great stuff. My friend got a fantastic steal of a little black dress in great condition from Le Chateau for under $10 and my steal was a sequined blazer for $5.  In all I spent $16 including the 20% discount on four items: a polka dotted navy and white skirt, the blazer, a silk wrap top and a black smock like tunic.

I have my own rules for buying things second hand - search for stains/holes: if either are present do not buy, Look at the tags: a lot of stuff is from walmart or superstore etc and are priced very similar to what you would pay for it new. If you know you can get it for the similar price new, move on. I will not buy fabric furniture from a thrift store simply because I know there is a massive bed bug problem in the city right now and I am paranoid. Also, I will buy slips second hand because they are expensive and surprisingly difficult to find new, but I will not buy bras etc (and I am really sorry if you do buy your bras second hand, but I think it is creepy)

Things to Note: The Salvation Army is now open until 9pm. Tuesdays you get 20% off with a valid student ID card and there is something that sounds magical called "Power Hour" that is held with some regularity but I do not have any more details on that except that it is cancelled this Friday.

A Wander - Public Gardens

So, I was going to go to the Museum of Natural History today, but 1) it was beautiful out and 2) their new exhibit doesn't open until the weekend. So I decided to wander up Spring Garden. Spring Garden Rd. just happens to lead to the Public Gardens where I spent the rest of my afternoon. It was awesome. I would have stayed longer (I was there for about 2 hours) but I decided to forgo my coat today and just wear a loose knit sweater and scarf which was sadly not enough coverage and I was freezing.

You may ask yourself what I was doing there for two hours. Well, truth be told I was reading a book. Specifically "Here's the Situation" by the Situation. I can't even go into it now. It is so bad/amazing. The entire thing was so awful/ridiculous that I was constantly texting excerpts to my peeps.  In  my defense I got it for .94 cents on my Kindle. Can't even go into it.

The Movies -

So I went to the movies this afternoon to shake off this boredom - there are only so many jobs/books to read to be had in one day - and I left with a few questions.

#1 - why when two dudes go to a movie do they leave one seat between them?
Is this some unwritten guy code that I am unaware of?

#2 - why would you sit 5 seats in from the left aisle entrance, but get up three
times to pee, and go out the right entrance causing everyone in your
entire row to have to move when you come and go?

#3 - why do you have to get up three times during a movie?

Fast Five was only good for the eye candy. Paul Walker, The Rock AND Tyrese in a movie? Daymn

Bridesmaids was not as amazing as everyone has been going on about. Yes, it was funny, it was just not as smooth (?) as I thought it should be. Like, I felt as if there were no transitions and everything went from scene to scene without thought. Also, I maybe related a bit too much to Kritsen Wiggs character in terms of her whole life falling apart and she can't get off the couch and I do not want to see that right now, so my perspective may be skewed. No worries though, the plan is to finally go to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow! Fun times guys, fun times.

Oh, and I totally only paid for Bridesmaids but thought ahead and timed it so I could waltz into another movie when it was over and the only one that fit was Fast Five. Shhh....

Kicking it Old School

Today I went to the library. They people downstairs were super nice. The people upstairs at the reference desk were... well... old?
It is a really nice library with loads of computers and really great deals on renting dvd's of TV shows: you get them for three weeks! Dude, that is unheard of. It is closed Mondays though, which really sucked when I walked there yesterday in the rain. There are a billion branches and they publish this library magazine every two months that I really enjoy and it has the book club info and reviews and events and art classes etc.
Then, then I made popcorn. On the stove. I decided against buying a microwave when I moved.
I am still solid in my decision.
the only reason I have a giant tub of butter is because it was the same price as the little container.

1) put oil (butter pour moi) in a pot on medium heat with a few kernels.
2) put lid askew and wait for poppage
3) when poppage occurs put about a 1/3 of a cup of kernels
4) cover askew again and shake occasionally
5) wait for poppage then pour into bowl, salt and butter to taste
6) eat until you feel like throwing up. It is addicting and delicious.

A Wander - Waterfront at Night

A big part of moving to someplace unknown is getting comfortable at night. The first two weeks I was not down with nighttime wanders; I did not know what was "safe" etc. These last few nights though I have been out and about. Tonight I did a lengthy wander of the waterfront (yes, I did a daytime wander of it last week, but I live right on it so where else am I supposed to go at night?) anyways, here are some tips:

 1) Add a layer. I thought was was good with my raincoat and scarf. Nope. Bring mitts and/or a sweater.

 2) Skip the lipgloss/wear your hair back. Serious. It was so windy and my hair was constantly stuck to my lips. I tried to wipe it off, but I was wearing that expensive Lancome stuff (christmas) and that shit does not come off!

  3) Bring your own beverage. I got a cup of (lukewarm) coffee to warm me up and it twas not good.

 * optional Get an awesome camera. The photos I could have taken tonight were amazing. Sadly my camera was not up to the task. Balls
my attempt at photographing downtown dartmouth

my attempt at photographing how windy it was

the best anti-theft window coverings in existence
4) As with any wander, especially a night one, be aware of your surroundings. I had awesome jams on my ipod, but only wear one ear dudes. Also, when I got a little sketched out on my way back I moved up a few streets because they are busier and have good lighting. Let's use some common sense and not end up on Bones.

A Wander - Granville Shopping Centre

yeah, that's a latte, what what!

my second favourite building in the city thus far.

all around the NSCAD buildings there were paint squiggles.
I took these this afternoon on my way to the Letter Press event that I posted about the other day.
Couldn't take any photos inside, but it seems like my kind of jam.
